FIXED APPLIANCES

Fixed appliances, known more commonly as 'train tracks', consist of a series of brackets, (typically stainless steel), which are cemented on to the teeth. For this reason they are worn for the duration of the treatment, and must only be removed by your orthodontist.

Treatment typically lasts anywhere from 9-24 months, depending on the severity of the case and can be worn by all age groups.

AESTHETIC APPLIANCES

Aesthetic braces are an increasingly popular choice with adults and teenagers, as they are less visible than traditional fixed braces.

Brackets on aesthetic appliances are generally clear or tooth coloured. White or tooth-coloured wires can also be used for an even more discrete, natural look. Aesthetic appliances are only available as a private treatment option.

INVISIBLE APPLIANCES

Belmont Orthodontics use the latest in invisible braces from Invisalign® which consists of a series of clear, removable custom-made aligners, which fit over the teeth.

With Invisalign® there is no need for metal wires or brackets. New aligners are fitted on average, every two weeks and should only be removed for cleaning, eating, drinking and contact sports.

Invisalign® braces are extremely discrete, so confidence is boosted both during and after treatment. With treatment lasting anywhere from 12 to 18 months, they are a very popular choice with our adult patients.Invisalign® braces are only available as a private treatment option.

SELF-LIGATING APPLIANCES

Self-ligating braces, such as the Damon® range, offer the benefit of fewer treatment appointments compared to traditional fixed appliances. They also eliminate the need for elastic or metal 'ties' thanks to their unique slide mechanism which move teeth faster with fewer adjustments.

This reduces the pressure on the teeth, making treatment more comfortable. Self-ligating appliances are also available in a cosmetic bracket which is less visible than the metal version.

Our practice uses Damon® braces routinely as we believe the benefits of fewer extractions, lighter forces and a wider smile, unique to this form of treatment, should be made available to all our patients, whether NHS or Private.

LINGUAL APPLIANCES

Lingual appliances are another 'discrete' option for adults and older teenagers. Given the demand for more natural braces, lingual appliances have the benefit of going unnoticed to others, as they are attached to the inside of the teeth.

However, as they are on the inside of the mouth, this can lead to increased discomfort to the wearer, particularly in the early stages, due to irritation of the tongue. Treatment times can vary. Lingual braces are difficult to place with increased time in the dental chair which also increases the cost of treatment. Lingual appliances are only available as a private treatment option.

FUNCTIONAL APPLIANCES

Functional appliances are generally only available to children up to the age of about 14 as they are most effective during active stages of growth. They work by positioning the lower jaw in a forward posture which stretches the muscles of the face and helps to correct protruding teeth. In some cases, these braces encourage favourable growth and help to improve the facial profile.

We use many types of functional appliances but the most common type of removable functional braces are in two pieces and are known as 'twin blocks'.

Typical treatments can last from 6-12 months. After this time, additional orthodontic treatment is often necessary to fine tune the position of individual teeth. Functional appliances are available as an NHS or private treatment option.
